What Assamese People are like

Many people in India have a misconception about North-east India.
Geographically, North-east India comprises of seven sisters and one brother, viz, Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and Sikkim. The cultural heritage of North-east India is different in different regions. There are hills as well as plains.

When I was in Bhubaneshwar for my Btech course, many of my classmates had this idea that we eat ants and human being. And some "dummies" even thought that we live in jungles and have no knowledge about technology.  But the real fact is that, we do not eat any kind of weird stuff that these fools think.

Since I am from Assam, I'll talk about Assam.

First of all, let me talk about our food habits. Our staple food is rice. Yes, you heard right, its rice. Not momos, not chowmein, its plain old steamed rice. We also have daal and vegetables with it. Besides these, there are many different ways of cooking rice. One such type is called “Patot diya Bhat”. In this method “Bhat” (uncooked rice) is tightly wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed. In another method, rice is place in fresh, hollow bamboo shoots and directly placed in fire. And not just rice, even meat (duck, chicken, pork) and fish are prepared in a similar method.

Most of our cuisines are boiled, grilled or lightly stewed. Fewer amounts of oil and spices are used compared to the rest of the country. There are some ethnic tribes who consume pork.

Pork is mostly grilled or boiled with herbs. Duck is mostly cooked with black pepper or fried. We also consume many different types of vegetables and my personal favorite is tender bamboo shoots.

There are many National parks and reserved forests, which are a home to many endangered species (besides the famous one-horned rhinoceros).

But the most important fact that I wish to point out is that, in North-East India women enjoy more freedom that the rest of the country. Neither dowry system nor the ritual of killing the girl child is followed here. Tribal women have the instinct to fight back if someone tries to abuse her, be it her husband or a family member.

So you see we are not cannibals living in some dark forests. We are a group of civilized people living in houses just like everyone else.
